Hyperhidrosis: causes and treatments

If you ever asked yourself “why do I sweat so much” or you’ve experienced sweating around neck and chest at night female, keep reading! So what is hyperhidrosis? Hyperhidrosis is a condition characterized by excessive sweating, which can significantly impact the quality of life. Although sweating is a natural and necessary process for regulating body temperature, in individuals with hyperhidrosis, the sweat glands are overactive and produce much more sweat than necessary. This can lead to physical and emotional discomfort, affecting social relationships and job performance. In this article, we will explore the causes of hyperhidrosis, with a focus on sweaty palms, and discuss how to treat hyperhidrosis.

What is hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is defined as excessive sweating that exceeds the physiological needs of the body. The condition can be primary or secondary.

  • Primary Hyperhidrosis: This is the most common form and has no apparent medical cause. It often affects the palms, soles, armpits, and face. Primary hyperhidrosis is considered hereditary and usually begins in childhood or adolescence.
  • Secondary Hyperhidrosis: This occurs as a result of medical conditions or the use of certain medications. Common causes include diabetes, hyperthyroidism, menopause, obesity, and some types of cancer.

Regardless of the type, hyperhidrosis can have a significant impact on daily life, interfering with daily activities and causing stress and anxiety, making the treatment necessary.

Palmar hyperhidrosis or sweaty palms

Palmar hyperhidrosis is one of the most common forms of hyperhidrosis and involves excessive sweating of the palms. This can be particularly problematic because sweaty palms can make everyday activities difficult, such as shaking hands, writing, or using electronic devices. Additionally, individuals with sweaty palms may develop skin irritations and fungal or bacterial infections due to constant moisture.

The exact causes of sweaty palms are not fully understood, but it is believed that the sympathetic nervous system plays an important role. This system is responsible for the body’s automatic responses, including sweating. In the case of sweaty palms, the nerves responsible for stimulating the sweat glands are overactive, causing the production of excessive sweat.

Hyperhidrosis treatment

When it comes to the treatment of hyperhidrosis, the course of action depends on the severity of the condition and the patient’s response to various therapies. In the following section, we will focus on the use of botox, one of the most effective and popular treatments for hyperhidrosis.

Injections with botulinum toxin, known as botox, represent an effective hyperhidrosis treatment, especially for axillary and palmar hyperhidrosis. Botox works by blocking the nerve signals that stimulate the sweat glands, thus reducing the production of excessive sweat. Here are the stages of hyperhidrosis treatment:

  • Initial evaluation: The doctor assesses the affected areas and determines the treatment plan.
  • Procedure: Botox is injected directly into the skin in areas with excessive sweating. The procedure is relatively quick and minimally invasive, usually lasting between 20 and 30 minutes.

  • Results: Effects begin to be noticeable within a few days, and excessive sweating is significantly reduced for 6 to 12 months. To maintain results, the treatment must be repeated periodically.

In addition to botox, there are other hyperhidrosis treatment methods, but these are mentioned only to provide a complete perspective: aluminum chloride-based antiperspirants, oral anticholinergic medications, or iontophoresis.
