Everything you need to know about breast lift

The breast lift procedure, also known as mastopexy, is a complex and precise surgical intervention designed to bring about a significant transformation in the appearance and shape of the breasts. As women go through different stages of their lives, such as aging, pregnancy, or significant weight fluctuations, their breasts may undergo considerable changes. These changes can include loss of skin elasticity, decreased breast volume, drooping nipples, and asymmetry between the two breasts. In any of these given situations, breast lift surgery becomes an attractive option for women who are looking to reshape their breasts and regain firmness and youthful appearance.

What is breast lift?

Breast lift is a surgical procedure that involves removing excess skin and glandular tissue, reshaping the breasts, and repositioning the nipples to achieve a higher, firmer, and more youthful appearance. This procedure can also be associated with breast augmentation if the patient desires breast enlargement. In this case, the procedure is known as mastopexy with implants, as opposed to surgery that does not require breast augmentation, known as mastopexy without implants. Breast lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia and involves making strategic incisions around the nipple and, in some cases, under the breast or in the axillary area. After removing excess skin and glandular tissue, the breasts are reshaped and redefined to achieve natural and harmonious results.

When is breast lift necessary?

Whether it’s mastopexy with implants or mastopexy without implants, this procedure is aimed at females experiencing sagging breasts. Potential candidates for breast lift surgery or mastopexy are women facing the following issues:

Nipple ptosis: Drooping breasts with nipples below the inframammary fold.

Loss of skin elasticity: Following pregnancy, breastfeeding, or as part of the natural aging process, breast skin loses its elasticity, causing the breasts to sag and droop.

Breast asymmetry: Significant differences in shape, size, and position between the two breasts.

Significant weight fluctuations: Rapid weight loss can lead to breast volume loss and a saggy appearance.

It is essential for patients to have realistic expectations regarding the results and to be in good general health to be considered suitable candidates for breast lift or mastopexy surgery.

What does the breast lift procedure involve?

The breast lift or mastopexy procedure involves several steps designed to ensure optimal aesthetic and functional results.

Initial consultation: The patient discusses her goals and expectations regarding breast appearance, while the surgeon conducts a detailed evaluation of breast anatomy and skin. The available surgical options are discussed, including the type of breast lift and the appropriate technique for each case.

Surgery planning: After the initial consultation, the surgeon and the patient establish the specific plan for the breast lift procedure. This plan may also include possible additional interventions, such as breast reduction or augmentation.

Anesthesia: Anesthesia can be local with sedation or general, depending on the patient’s preferences and the surgeon’s recommendations.

Incision, lifting, tissue remodeling, and nipple resizing: After administering anesthesia, the surgeon performs the surgery according to the predetermined plan.

Incision closure: Once the reshaping is complete, the incisions are closed with surgical sutures, and sterile dressings are applied to protect the surgical area.

Postoperative recovery: After surgery, the patient is monitored in the operating room to ensure proper recovery. Medications may be prescribed for pain management and infection prevention. Patients will need to follow specific postoperative care instructions and return for follow-up appointments for suture removal and progress assessment.
